Building a first home studio

The order in which to spend

The usual first purchase is a microphone, then an interface, then headphones, and treatment last if at all. Reversing that produces better recordings for the same money. A blanket-and-panel arrangement behind the singer changes the result more than the difference between two microphones a hundred euros apart. It is also the part nobody photographs for a shop window, which may explain the order everyone follows.

Dynamic microphones in untreated rooms

Large-diaphragm condensers are what people picture when they think of recording. They also pick up the room in detail, and in a bedroom or a garage that detail is not flattering. A good dynamic microphone hears less of the space, sits closer to the source, and forgives a great deal. Plenty of finished records were made that way, and not because the budget ran out.
